''The First Lady of the Third Reich'' The beautiful woman in the photograph was the wife of Joseph Goebbels, who served as propaganda minister in Adolf Hitler's Nazi government. She ended her life in the name of
Magda Goebbels and the Road to the Bunker
Magda was born in Berlin in 1901 to Augusta and the engineer Oskar Ritschel, who divorced in 1904. Magda's mother remarried a Jewish man named Richard Friedländer and moved with him to Brussels.
When World War I broke out, German citizens were expelled from Belgium, and Magda, then 16, returned to Berlin with her mother. During this period, Magda became friends with another refugee from Belgium, Liza Arlosoroff, sister of Chaim Arlosoroff, one of the leaders of the Zionist movement. When Chaim Arlosoroff left Germany in 1923, Magda accompanied him to the railway platform and tried to persuade him to stay. When she failed, she burst into tears.
At the age of 17, Magda met Günther Quandt, a 34-year-old industrialist who, years later, would own several large companies, including BMW. Magda and Günther married in January 1921. In 1927, Magda and Günther went on a six-month trip to the United States, where the nephew of US President Herbert Hoover fell in love with Magda.
At the end of 1928, during one of Arlosoroff's frequent visits to Germany, he met his friend Magda, who turned out to share his Zionist vision and even discussed with him the future of the Jewish state that had to be established in the Land of Israel.
In 1929, Magda divorced Quandt, and her conversations with Chaim Arlosoroff about the future of the Jews in the Land of Israel developed into a passionate love affair that lasted until the spring of 1931. She even wore a Star of David necklace that she had received as a gift from Chaim Arlosoroff.
During 1930, Magda met Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi propagandist, and fell under his satanic spell. Hitler, too, grew close to Magda and became a good friend of hers. He would even sit with her and talk late into the night. After a failed attempt to poison Hitler in January 1933, he asked Magda to prepare all his meals.
Magda and Joseph Goebbels had six children: Helga, Hildegard, Helmut (the only boy), Holdine, Hedwig, and Heidrun. All their names began with the letter H as a mark of respect for Hitler.
On April 22, 1945, as the Red Army entered Berlin, the entire Goebbels family moved into the Führerbunker. The only private shower and toilet in the bunker belonged to Hitler himself, and he was happy to share them with Magda and her children.
On May 1, 1945, Magda and her husband sedated their children with morphine and then murdered them by breaking cyanide pills in their mouths. After murdering the children, Magda and Joseph Goebbels went outside the bunker and committed suicide.
